What is a RACI matrix?
RACI is a responsibility assignment matrix. Tasks or decisions run down the side; roles run across the top; each cell gets a letter: R (Responsible), A (Accountable), C (Consulted) or I (Informed).
What R, A, C and I mean
- Responsible — does the work. There can be several.
- Accountable — owns the outcome and signs off. Exactly one per task.
- Consulted — gives input before the work is done (two-way).
- Informed — is told about progress or results (one-way).
RACI example: monthly stock count
| Task | Store manager | Store staff | Finance | Operations head |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Plan the count | A | I | C | I |
| Count stock | A | R | I | — |
| Reconcile variances | R | C | A | I |
| Approve write-offs | C | — | R | A |
Common mistakes to avoid
- More than one A on a task.
- Too many Cs, which slows everything down.
- Building the matrix but never sharing or updating it.
How DOOfy helps
A RACI matrix tells people who owns what; DOOfy shows them what needs their attention. Alerts and approvals in AIMOS One can follow the same roles, so the Accountable person sees exceptions first.
Frequently asked questions
Can a task have more than one Accountable person?
No. One person must be accountable for each task or decision; several people can be Responsible.
What is the difference between Responsible and Accountable?
Responsible people do the work. The Accountable person owns the result and has final sign-off.
